This relaxing, push-the-envelope class is great fun and a stash-buster! The resulting squares (or strips) are embellished (we will use crochet chains, but you could as well use embroidery) and then organized into jackets, ponchos, market bags, baby sweaters, pillows, blankets, shawls – on and on. These techniques were pioneered by New Mexico’s Valentina Devine, who recently died; the class is a memorial to her, as is the model jacket to be shown in the shop, which employs many of her techniques (with some changes and additions gathered over two decades of conversations with her). The course helps you cut loose, within limits (there ARE some rules), to trust your color and textural sense, and to imagine useful, beautiful objects from within piles of stray balls of yarn. Think yarn paintings!

Materials: 8-10 balls of fingering, DK, worsted, and/or chunky yarns in various colors and textures (a bit of metallic and surface fuzz is always good). One 100-gram (or more) ball of worsted-weight yarn in a ‘neutral’ color to mix with your stray balls (e.g., black, navy, brown, aubergine, gray). Black or charcoal are good opening gambit because they go with everything. Very lightweight yarns will be doubled. We will aim at a gauge of 4.5 sts/inch. Size 8 or 9 circular needles, 16- or 24-inch, Crochet hook size G or H. Tapestry needle. Scissors. Tape measure. We supply a big pile of supplementary yarns. Prepare to share your stray balls with others!

For most classes, we hope you’ll use our beautiful yarns! We offer a 10% discount on full-priced materials to be used in the class.

*For stash-buster classes, you surely may use your own yarns mixed with ours.

All classes include detailed handouts or (as relevant) printed patterns.

Classes may require a minimum number of participants; if Artisan Knitworks or the instructor has to cancel full refund (check) or store credit will be offered.

If you have to cancel your class registration within 7 days of the event,  Artisan Knitworks offers a choice between 120% of your class fee for in-store merchandise, registration in another listed class, or a refund check for the amount paid.  We cannot offer these choices within the 7-day window.
