Description

Stranded knitting uses two yarns in the same row (or round) to create designs in your knitting.  It includes Fair Isle patterning (British) as well as many currently popular Scandinavian designs.  It can be done with either Continental or English knitting techniques used exclusively.  In this class, however, we will use both techniques at the same time.

While a bit intricate, two-handed Fair-Isle knitting is not hard to do and rewards your efforts with beautiful, evenly tensioned images.  You will create a gorgeous stranded hat using the two-handed method. You also will learn to plan and read colorwork charts.

This project will be done on circular needles.  You should be comfortable knitting in the round.

Pattern: Blue Sky Woolstok (worsted weight) 21 Color Fair- Isle Hat (pattern provided)

Supplies:  US 6 and 7 circular needles, 16 inch.   1 50-gram skein (123 yards) Woolstok, 1 Woolstok 21 Color Bundle of mini-skeins (all available to students for 10% off regular price.  Pattern and yarns will be in stock at least 30 days before class.  We hope you will buy yarn from Artisan Knitworks.

Homework:  Using smaller needles, cast on and work the ribbing; then knit 3 rounds (stockinette).

About Sharon Rakow:

Sharon Rakow has been teaching beginners and experienced knitters alike for almost two decades.  She was employed at Knit Around Yarn Shop, Ann Arbor, Michigan, for 10 years and then at Always in Stitches, Noblesville, Indiana, for 3 years.  And, after returning to Michigan some years ago, she worked and taught for a year at Artisan Knitworks.  Sharon has been known to say that she is fearless.  She believes that, by expanding a knitter’s skills and repertoire of techniques, any project can be conquered. She especially enjoys introducing knitters to the beauty and ease of Fair Isle and other varieties of stranded colorwork.

When not knitting or spinning, Sharon works in IT. She is also part owner of WheelyCool Fibers where she is responsible for designing and creating hand-spun yarns and spinning blends. Some of her hand-spuns can be found at Artisan Knitworks.
