Knitting With Finesse (7/20)

Description

This workshop explores a number of problems and practices that can make all the difference in the quality of your knitting.  It also anticipates problems that beginners might encounter as they move into intermediate and advanced projects.  You are encouraged to bring problems that you have encountered to this workshop; we’ll consider them before we adjourn.  

Among the techniques and practices at issue are these:

• Discussion of blocking – why not just skip it?
• How to know a ‘bad’ pattern when you see one
• How to read charts and graphs (and lists of abbreviations)
• Needle sizing and ribbing (or other edgings):
• Adding yarn; darning in yarn ends  
• Varieties of increase/decrease’’
• Afterthought pockets (and other alterations)
• Provisional and permanent casts-ons
• Varieties of bind-off
• Comparison of continental/English purls/knits
• Standard short-rows vs. German s hort-rows
• Pick-up vs. Pick Up and Knit
• Basic cables and their effect on fabric
• The value of selvedges
• Varieties of buttonholes
• Mattress stitch vs. other assembly techniques
• Handling knitted fabric vs. Woven fabric
• Properties of stitch patterns, esp. stitch and row counts
• ‘reading’ your knitting
• Fixing common mistakes
• Making use of simple crochet

Homework:   Make 3-4 swatches in stockinette (one in garter) in DK or worsted weight, preferably animal fiber or animal fiber blend.  

Materials:  Tapestry needle, scissors, cable hook or double-pointed needle

All classes include detailed handouts or (as relevant) printed patterns.

Classes may require a minimum number of participants.  If Artisan Knitworks or the instructor has to cancel, a full refund (check), registration in another class, or store credit (120% of tuition) will be offered.  If you have to cancel your class registration up to 7 days before the event, we offer the same choices.  However, we cannot offer these choices if you cancel within the 7-day window.
